Mr Botta has learned to say with
the aid of a sheet of paper covered
with characters for he writes the
English words in Japanese characters.
Then Pete had a strip of paper with
the sketches on it. ???? ???

special cards were brought and the

What we were supposed to draw we
couldn't imagine, so he hunted
again and found "Liberty" so we
gathered they meant a free
hand drawing. Pete painted a corker
and I did an awful pine tree and
the man was delighted. The boy
had meanwhile been studiously
writing words out of the dictionary
and passed the paper to us which
