my neck, and then Eddie (the Hawaiian boy who went to Banff once to drive for Brewsters and who drives for them here and is a great friend of Pete's) was had two very lovely carnation lie's {sic} for me which he had specially picked for me, and then he drove us to the hotel which is easily two miles from the city, and right on the beach. It was a glorious day and not a bit too hot in fact it seems to be lovely and cool all the time. So far it has been perfect, a light cool breeze and plenty of shade to protect you from a hot sun. It's

Honolulu is a lovely city and has unusually fine buildings. Sort of Spanish Architecture with Linais {sic} (which are covered porches, peazzas {sic} or verandahs) and lovely flowering shrubs or vines. Then there are beautiful parks as well, and every thing seems very cool and clean. The street cars are all open and its like June and a city built for June. Nassau seems so stupid compared with this for it was dirty and muggy and you felt everything was rotting awayand the natives were slaves and not happy. Here everyone enjoys life and simple

In the evning there are often women on the sidewalks making and selling leis, and it is most surprising to have them wander up to sel them to you and though you smile and say"no" they merely smile in return as if you were an old friend and sat, "good evening" and then wander away without pressing you to buy any more. Every one smiles here and it is rather nice.

The Moana is a very old fashioned high building with two newer wings, then there's the Royal Hawaiian Hotel which is much larger, very modern beautiful and more expensive, but the Moana has more of the atmosphere ans is simple and awfully nice. Its the kind of place where you might see a row of rocking chairs. In the rear there is the largest Banyan tree, the kind that has rots which fall down from the branches and take root to form a larger trunk. It makes a perfect shade tree nd completely covers or fills the court yard in the back of the hotel. The branches reaching out to touch the walls on the three sides. the fourth side is open and is the sea. The

Moana Hotel letterhead {red pencil "9"} 9 hotel is right on the edge of the beach and there isn't even room for a walk around one end. Waikiki beach is all along the front. To the right the Outrigger Canoe Club has its grounds and then comes the Royal Hawaiian and then private houses & some smaller hotels. The beach is all public for everyone with paths leading to it from the road, but the grounds are private. The beach itself is a lovely one, its not wide at all, in fact only fifty feet at its widest and then there is a wall aroiund the hotel grounds and in
