Transcribing

Once you sign up for an account, a new Transcribe tab will appear above each page.

You can create or edit transcriptions by modifying the text entry field and saving. Each modification is stored as a separate version of the page, so that it should be easy to revert to older versions if necessary.

Registered users can also add notes to pages to comment on difficult words, suggest readings, or discuss the texts.

Transcription Conventions

Press Enter once to end a line and twice to end a paragraph.

Use original spelling, capitalization and punctuation if possible.

If unsure of words, use these symbols:

  • Word that you think you know but aren't sure: follow with a question mark - so 'Smith?'
  • Word for which you can only understand a few letters or none: between square brackets, put as many dots as you think there are letters, inserting actual letters only where legible - so [B..w..n]
  • Editorial comments such as 'above the line', 'in blue ink', or 'illegible': place in curly brackets, with any text preserved in quotes, after a colon - so {in a second hand above the line: 'recently'}; for carats, write {carat: 'insertion'}

Optionally, you may use basic HTML markup tags to indicate formatting of text, such as:

  • <s>text</s> or <strike>text</strike> for strikethrough
  • <u>text</u> for underline
  • <strong>text</strong> or <b>text</b> for bold
  • <i>text</i> for italic
  • <a href='URL'>link text</a> for hyperlink
