Lake. Bear on trail Those in front see him Travel fast with lots of canters. Camp on flat near {above the line: 'Medicine'} Lake, getting in at 2:15. Try to fish but lake is too shallow near shore. Quite tired. Horseshoe quoits on camp ground. After supper seven of us + Jim go to fish in Jacques Lake Riding Patches. Caroline camped there before + thought it would take about a half hour. Instead it took 1 1/2 hrs. Passed 4 lakes

+ asked each time "Is this it?" Saw a large buck on shore. Finally reached lake about 8:45 It was shallow all around the edge with timber so that it was hard to cast. Fish were jumping in the center about two every half minute. Tried wading out into lake but water was too

cold to cast more than twice but I could get my fly to within 10 feet of them. Rode home in pitch darkness. Couldnt see the horse in front at all [dash] Got in at 11:30 pm [dash] Grouchy + fix beds in Tenement Cocoa, biscuits + honey. Tired to death + bed. Sleep very well. Sun 26 [dash] Start about 9:45 pm on good trail along lake, then down

Maligne River. Strike wide road + go in pairs. Wagon road not auto. Good gallops. Met a party coming from Jasper. Camp near Maligne Canyon. Ride down + look at Canyon. Madelaine + I walk down quite a distance expecting others to follow. Take pictures. Other ride fork to camp without us leaving

our horses. We had a "strawberry crush" a strange drink bought chocolate bars, + rode back to camp. Camp is near the river + tepee, tenement + [chrise?] boxes are near together + form a little circle facing one another. Sun is very warm + it looks as if we would have a warm night. Curley Phillips + wife came up to visit [dash] Florence goes in to Lodge to spend the night with friends
