She told me all about the trip over for she and a lot of others going to Los Angeles just stay on the boat. They picked up some 85 people on the Island of Hilo who were making a movie "Frightened children" or something like that. Claudette Couberte {above the line in blue: 'Colbert'} (I can't spell it) and Auv/ Mary Bohlen {above the line in blue: 'Borland'} (or is it Ann) and directed by Cecil de Mille. They are still on board and its rather fun. Mary Bohlen {above the line in blue: 'Borland'} stood by us throwing streamers as we left and in fact threw {gh one of mine. She's very amusing. {Note from transcriber: actress actual name is Boland}

{Top centre: "3"} most the men seemed dressed peculiarly but I imagine the ones you spot are naturally the eccentric ones, the highly painted girls and the artist looking men. Cecil de Mille is really very attractive looking. Thr girl said they all have their doubles and some times you can't tell which is which when you meet them on deck.

The band played and every one threw streamers as we pulled out and it was quite exciting. No tugs to contend with we just backed away - It was uite foggy but very lovely when the sun shone on the land beyond the fog and it gave it a soft veiled appearance. It was thicker outside

Raymond-Whitcomb has spoken for a deck chair in the best location and also a seat at the Doctor's table which makes it nice. Besides me there is a Miss Lawrance (?) who is returning to Los Angeles and so highly painted that we all thought she was one of the movie stars, but on the contrary has nothing to do with pictures. Has spent 6 months in California and seen every thing and loves that, and now has decided to see Honolulu, and will stay some time if she likes it. Sprained her ankle last night but decided she would come anyway as it is too much trouble to cancel things.

And I near;y forgot. There was a message in my room about a package for me, and

{Top centre: "6"} I was so excited when I got it from the Purser. It was from some San Francisco bookseller I think. If it hadn't included "Water Gypsies" I shouldn't have known it was from you. It was before lunch, and when I got back the Steward had thrown the paper away. However your letter came this afternoon and thank you so much. I also got a letter from Pete and he still thinks he will be awfully glad to see me and needless to say the time can't go any too fast to suit me. He will come out on the tug he says to meet the boat. So really I had a grand start to the trip.
